Thimannur Sreegeetha’s life with her husband, who has been suffering from schizophrenia for 12 years, is a big struggle.It is a state of mind in which one is unable to recognize reality, to think rationally, and to act in a proper manner.Sree Geetha seeks to live as a son, caring for her husband without letting him become a burden to the schizophrenia community.
This year’s Eastern Land Award came in recognition of the community’s journey. Sreegeetha from Chittoor South Village, Palakkad came to Ernakulam because her husband’s job here.When she got married 12 years ago, she realized that her husband had only minor depression and needed medication for the rest of his life.
Later, the nature of the disease changed and he was treated by a doctor in Chennai. At first, the medicine came from there.Mr. Geeta asked the doctor to see him in person in Chennai but he was disappointed and refused to continue the treatment.She was later taken to a popular hospital in Bangalore where her doctor tried to reduce the dose of her husband’s medication.
